Read Diary

Mar. 13, 1985

Well here’s a picture of a body not much use for anything today. Stayed in all day doing very little. (Mielie) phoned at 8:50 to say tonight was off for Aloha which suited me fine. Called Faith & Peg. Got my album of Oscar Peterson – it’s good. Worked some more needlepoint. Dell called to put my hair off till 11am tomorrow.

Vera (Durelly) called to tell me Myre Barrett died yesterday evening. We are so grateful that at least she is at rest. She hasn’t known anyone for many months. Another example of 5 years. She was sicker in Feb. 1980 _ I remember I didn’t hear from her for my b.d. and knew there was something wrong. What fun times we had together! over nearly 40 years _ I looked it up in my diary from Dec. ’79 through early ’80 & read for 3 hours!

To the Manor Born

Feb. 15, 1985

It was 5 years ago today Barbara & Bob MacLean came to see me & gave me the shell paperknife_ I was waiting at home in the fierce rain to hear of John’s arrival. Today was 23 degrees & no snow until a flurry at evening. Faith called me early as she had a dentist app’t & a funeral. Called Vi Catell for a catch up. Called Kay Porter for our bi-weekly. Called Kay & they were leaving for the dentist (Art) & she didn’t get back to me. Went down to Eaton’s at 11 & got a white pleated skirt & 2 pairs of navy slacks for summer. One is to be delivered next Fri. Did needlepoint in p.m. Letter & card from Bill Edwards & from Vera Lacher – fun card from Peg. Watched Murder She Wrote, To the Manor Born & Bless Me Father – all a riot. Read C.S. Lewis’s Screw tape Letters & S. proposes a Toast (from Peg).

Big Question Mark Then Blizzard

Valentine’s Day (Feb. 14, 1985)

A big question mark all day. 24 degrees at 7am & holding but little wind. Till 4pm when a blizzard hit hard for about 1 hour. The evening after that was 22 degrees but little wind again. I’m afraid Toronto can join Calif – “If you don’t like the weather, wait a few minutes.” Went for my hair at 9am. Dieter has flu & Ray did my hair his way. – back-combing & making it look like every other 70’s.

Walked to fruit store, (Becker’s & Borfs) after, the walking heavy slogging. After lunch did needlepoint. Pat called at 4. She hadn’t heard from Dorothy so I ordered a taxi for 7 (waited 5 min. to get a line). At 5:45 Dorothy called. She had been over all afternoon! So I cancelled the taxi, after calling 5 times. There were 8 of us out & we had a good meeting. The party went well. The cake & strawberries, Valentines, heart napkins & red candles. The hall has a new stove! Eight-Pat, Helen, Dorothy, Nylle, Rose Mac, Irene, Elinor & me. Six last time of whom Doris & Janet were not here tonight. The attendance is ridiculous, but Markham hasn’t met all of January.

Faith hasn’t driven out since she wrenched her side last Sunday.

Honest Abe

Feb. 12, 1985

Birthday of one of my favorite heroes – “honest Abe”.

Rained & snowed before 6a.m. & heavy snow after 7 at 32 degrees. I can’t see out any east window — covered over with snow. High wind too. Slushy still but okay! if it freezes _ Continued till well into p.m. then stopped snowing. In evening rain & rest of the night. Raining next a.m.

Called Faith. She didn’t go out at all! Peg went to a fashion show at St. Clement’s. I’d meant to go to a tea of St. (Cuthbert’s) & didn’t. Walked over to Dom. for cake & milk & strawberries for Thurs. Not slippery but heavy slush. Temp went up in p.m. to 38 degrees & stayed there. B.d. card from Edna Atkinson & Joan Roberts & a letter from Katy Province.

Sewed up my teddy bear ready to stuff. From Book-of-T-M. Club I ordered a book on word games for Hugh’s b.d. & also an album of Oscar Peterson. He’s the best jazz pianist alive. Found his autograph on a school program at a party at the Royal York in ’49 (or ’47. It couldn’t be ’48).

Amused myself by reading 1979 diary. Just impresses me with all the things I don’t remember otherwise than writing it down.

Murder She Wrote First Season

Feb. 3, 1985

Ten above & only to 14 degrees but beautiful sun. Tried my bike first time since my tumble & it did my hip good methinks. Went out to mail Edith’s letter & down to Bayview & back all I was out. Sorted, read & threw out old calendars etc. & organized a bit of Robert’s letters. The needlepoint has areas marked A-V & I’ve done ABC by this afternoon. Watched Bing Crosby Pro Am – The Monterey peninsula makes me ache it’s so beautiful. O’Meara won over by one stroke_

Knitted & watched Murder She Wrote at 8_ {Season 1, Episode 12
Murder to a Jazz Beat (3 Feb. 1985)} Also a bit of #8 of Jewel in the Crown. It doesn’t seem right not to watch Alistair’s program.

No Sun For The Groundhog

Feb. 2, 1985

No sun for the ground hog. From 14 degrees to 24 degrees & dry. Wrote Edith.

Listened to “Otello” from the Met. with Domingo and Milnes.

Desdemona was a debut Welsh Marjorie Price & the Venetian ambassador a new Welsh tenor Glyn Howell – watch them. Next week Domingo conducts La Boheme but I’ll be at Royal Alex. Started the needlepoint. Did top part of the owl’s head & concentration gave me a headache! watch Katy Hepburn in Summertime for the 3rd time. David Lean again with his trains. I’d forgotten he had the train at the end going across the causeway, away off. Just like in A Passage to India across the plain & in Dr. Zhivago across the steppes.

No Sun For The Groundhog

No Sun

Feb. 1, 1985

No sun & 30 degrees all day til late evening. When we came home at 12:15 it was 14 degrees. Called Faith & Peg called me before I left for Muriel’s at 9:45. Got there just at 11. Lovely visit & lunch. My left hip was bothering me so she gave me her hair drier trained on it nearly all the time. When I came away at 2:15 I couldn’t feel it. Then standing in the bus in a turn undid all the good. Eased up later. Got home at 3:25 for a 1 1/2hr rest before leaving with Peg for Shopsey’s. Met Daisy for a good dinner of frankfurters & beans! Faust was interesting for the 1st time. Didn’t realize I know so much of the music.

Met Maureen Bennett (Northcliffe) in the lobby before. Now I’m curious what she does as she said “they stay with us so we know them all”. Meaning the out of town cast ?? Sent Charlie Deakin a sympathy note from Chapter.
